For readers who were able to attend the Women's Music Festival in August in Hesperia, Michigan, this group probably gave one of the most powerful performances of the festival. Sweet Honey in the Rock is a group that Oven Productions has wanted to bring to Cleveland for a year, and we are absolutely delighted to have our chance. For readers who have not yet heard their music. a quote from Sweet Honey:

to

Sweet Honey's identity is Black Woman Singer. We are of a Black people, we are of a women people, we are of a singing people. We are committed as a unit to the development of our identity in, toward, and with all these communities. We would want to serve and commune "with, nurture and be nurtured in our communities as socially and politically aware cultural artists. . . .

Their repertoire runs from children's songs and prison songs of the rural South, to Gospel and blues. Black women lovesongs and socio-political statements of today. The name of the group, Sweet Honey in the Rock, is hased on the choral refrains of a traditional Black song. As used by this group, it symbolizes the unique characteristics of Black womanhood: strength, consistency, warmth and gentleness. In addition to the concert, we hope to plan a time when the women's community can meet and talk with the women of Sweet Honey. So everyone mark your calendars, and watch for more information in this paper for ticket sales, and other upcoming Oven events.

Once again, we want the women's community to know what the financial situation of Oven Productions looks like. The figures that follow will give readers a good idea of where we got our money and how we spent it last year. Obviously, our sound equipment is our biggest asset, and without the women who donated or loaned money to us we could never have bought it as soon as we did.

Rape Crisis HOT LETTER

Cleveland Rape Crisis Center

Cleveland N.O.W. presented the Rape Crisis Center with the Josephine P. Irwin Award on August The award is presented each year on the anniversary of the ratification of the Nineteenth Amendment. Barbara Lombardo, President of Cleveland N.O.W., said that the award is presented to an organization which has done the most during the year to benefit women in the Cleveland area.

:

The next training workshop for CRCC advocates will begin on Tuesday evening, October 10. Workshop sessions will be held each Tuesday and Thursday evening for three weeks. Anyone who would like to volunteer can call Volunteer Coordina. tor Carie Zander at 391-3912 between 8:30 a.m. and 5:00 p.m.

The brochure "Rape Resource' is now available in large quantities from the Cleveland Rape Crisis Center. The information in the brochure answers some commonly asked questions such as:

What is Rape?

How can I prevent it from happening to me? What should I do if it does happen to me or to someone I know?

Experience has taught that if there is greater understanding of the crime of rape, it is easier for a victim and the people around her/him to adjust to the crisis s/he has experienced. Hopefully, knowledge of the reasons and motivations for rape will help build strengths and decrease the level of fear that exists among most women.

A grant from the Cleveland Foundation has made it possible for the Rape Crisis Center to offer "Rape Resource" free of charge to Cleveland schools, health centers and other non-profit organizations.

Business and profit-making organizations can make the brochure available to their employees or members by purchasing them from CRCC according to the prices listed below. Anyone requiring mailing or delivery of the brochures should pay the postage/delivery fee.
